A day to reflect

A long time ago I started a company called PutMeOnTheList which was this idea that you would put your name on a list and your cell phone would be called when your table was ready.  That company became RIDSI because the name PutMeOnTheList was stupid. The idea of a list and cell phone paging was also stupid and I soon created an online ordering application.  I teamed up with some other people and figured out how to interface with the Aloha POS system and soon we were off to the races. I met my co-founder, Jim Garrett and we started Kudzu Interactive. Kudzu Interactive became SnapFinger.com which is now going to be another company after being acquired today.

I learned a lot from my co-founder, probably more than from my previous companies and any I have started since.  However we could not be partners.  I am pleased that a second company I started has gone on to be acquired.

I congratulate my former co-founder Jim on the acquisition and hope that the new company is a success.

HealthByConnect and Video

As a development company we tend to stick with proven technologies or those technologies that we believe will continue to be viable for years to come.  Viable does not mean "be around" it means able to  easily find developers who can develop and maintain your code base.  Everyday their is a new and sexier development language.  However if only a small number of developers learn the language and your entire code base is based on the sexy language it does not seem so sexy anymore.

The same goes with video. What made flash so good was the fact that it had a huge distribution system to almost every desktop in the world.  Then something happened, I have heard many stories, but for some reason flash did not make the jump to mobile. Then flash made the big Apple mad and suddenly what we all knew about flash became vogue to say.  Everybody in the video development industry knew the issues with flash, we just developed around them. However it worked, then it stopped working and a decision had to be made.

Flash still works but we have found that it is no way as stable as it was. In addition I do not believe the support is still there for the flash plugin and mobile support has definitely disappeared. HealthByConnect like many companies has adopted the WebRTC protocol an encrypted web standard usable by modern browsers and mobile devices.

We feel that WebRTC offers the secure and modern future to video communication for the Healthcare Industry.  HealthByConnect has enabled several additional security features in addition to the standard encryption offered by WebRTC making a video connection extremely secure.

WebRTC is a powerful open source secure video protocol adopted by the largest browser companies and we are very excited to bring you this technology.

If you have any questions drop me a line.

Thanks
Jeffrey

For just a little bit I was a hero

So I am going to date myself a little bit here. I have a daughter that is doing an internship at a local District Attorney's office in her final year of law school. During her years at Georgia Tech we had given her a Mac to  study with and it was not cooperating. The tech people at the DA's office were no help and this had been going on for 5 days.  This was some software that was proprietary to the DA's office so I guess I was the last resort.

So I receive the call on Sunday afternoon in a panic to please help her.  I have no idea who the tech support people were because it took about 30 seconds before I had it figured out and fixed. It was a simple fix and any computer tech support person should have caught it. However I was happy that my daughter still for the moment thought I was smart and brilliant and going back to the office to brag about me. It really made my weekend.

As HealthByConnect grows we have ups and downs.  Good times and bad times. Good employees and bad employees. Good investors and bad investors. Good ideas and bad ideas. Good releases and bad releases. Good cash flow and bad cash flow. Acceptance and rejection. In the end you simply have to celebrate all the good and learn from all the rest.
